Theory of Thinking

Do you know the story you tell yourself? I am working on my daily thought patterns and trying to escape the story I tell myself. You know the story, even if you think you don’t. Someone says something to upset you, something happens out of your control, or you feel like you are having one of those days where the whole world is against you. Then, you ruminate on it for the next 30 seconds, 30 minutes, 30 hours, 30 days, or 30 years. Does it sound familiar now?

Believe it or not, the process of trying to escape the story you tell yourself is quite easy. All one needs to do is think about their thinking. So simple! For a split second, when I can step outside of my own thoughts and see the story I am telling myself, I realize how ridiculous it sounds. But…

It’s really fucking hard to change the way I think! After all, I have been thinking this way for the past 39 or so years. I suspect it is the same for most humans. Why would I even want to change the way I think? My negative thinking led to negative outcomes; moodiness, unhealthy relationships, and sickness. What better reason than that to change?

Descartes said, “I think, therefore I am.” I believe the statement should read, “I think, therefore I should think.” Awareness is the first step. Now, I think I will go think about that.
